So these so not pretty ones come to me as Sc 182, 1˘ and Sc 183, 2˘. I see no secret marks on either. I have not been that good determining paper type and I have more than I care to think about of the 1˘ Franklins, BUT, im stumped on the 2˘ - what is the Scott no. ?? If anyone can help, I'll take the no. too for the Franklin as a BONUS! . Still looking !!! Guessing im just overlooking the 2˘.

Many thanks.... Wm

PS - the mark in the lower right corner of the 2˘ I do find curious though

Secret marks: What do you see inside the red circle here?

It would help us help you if we knew a little more about what printed or online reference you are trying to use to ID your stamps. Whatever it is, it is not conveying the differences very well and the rest of us may be able to point you ina better direction, etc.

The mark at the lower right of the 2 cent #183 stamp is an arrow to assist in cutting the press sheets into panes. As such, it is a "position piece" identifiable to the 100th stamp in the left pane as sold over the counter.

Scotts Specialized catalog of US stamps & covers and this ( I forget where it comes from)....

I cant upload a .pdf, so here's a screen shot.

And you're right on the mark in the pearl - I remembered seeing a crescent desc. only. But now I see dash or crescent. So my mistake, I missed it earlier. But I still do not see a small diagonal line under the scroll on the left side of the 2˘. Once again, getting that from the Scott specialized catalogue of US stamps & covers.

https://stampsmarter.org/1847usa/18...Note02c.html

I do not see secret mark denoted for the 2˘ vermilion, Sc 183.

Here, https://postalmuseum.si.edu/exhibit...3/large-bank, it is described. But, Im still not sure what exactly is being referred to....

And here, https://www.kenmorestamp.com/1873-1...secret-marks

I do not see Sc 183 referenced.

Wondering if you'd be so kind as to denote the secret mark on the 2˘ Jackson so I'll have a reference. Thanks!

The secret mark on the 2-cent Jackson large bank note has intermittently been a source of debate over the years - what it is exactly or if it even exists. In my opinion the "diagonal line" description is not very helpful. I don't know if I've ever seen one clearly and unmistakably. I've tended to rely on color to distinguish National (red brown) and Continental (true brown) printings. WRT the secret mark, if it exists I think the best empirical test is whether the outline of the scroll at upper left is open (no secret mark) or closed (secret mark).

This is a plate layout guide mark, delineating the separation of panes on the printing plate. The upward pointing arrow was at the bottom of the plate, indicating that this stamp was position 100L.

I took high resolution scans of my 2c and used Sharpen AI to try to pull out the features a little better. The (supposed) 146 here has an "open" scroll, which means no secret mark. The arrow is pointing to the open part of the scroll.

Now this scan is pointing to a closed part of the scroll (secret mark).

Not the best examples, but all I have.

Here is a closeup of yours, with the same arrow that I put on my two copies, and a circle showing exactly where you should be looking. Let's ignore what @Peter said earlier, and concentrate on what @dudley said and the two scans that I uploaded. If you look carefully at what is called "open" and "closed", it should be very obvious that yours is "closed", and hence it is a secret mark.
