The new edition of Yvert's catalogue of French Colonies has just been published, @€74.90 -

https://www.yvert.com/A-292060-colo...-Sem44-PHILA

The previous edition sold out fairly quickly in hard copy.

They should make a copy in English and it will double their sales numbers or a bi-language edition .

It's pretty easy to follow, and most people who collect French stamps will have, or have developed, some familiarity with the language. The cost of producing an English or bilingual version would probably be substantial.

I wish Stanley Gibbon's would produce English versions.

I still keep Stanley in reserve. I'm not THAT confident of my French.

The first edition is a superb & high quality resource, quickly became indispensable for my French colony purchases & sales. Will be sure to pick this one up.

There are a lot of shade variations in French Colonies and apparently some stamps that exist in both chalky and ordinary paper (according to Scott). I've been disappointed that Yvert has not listed more shades or printing varieties. This is one of the greatest features of SG for Commonwealth.

Perhaps info doesn't exist to tie certain shades to specific printings?

It may be come down to local collecting taste. For example, there is plainly a variety of shades in the immediate post-war engraved issues, but neither Maury nor Yvert bothers with them.

The revamped Yverts are definitely an improvement on the previous versions, and it's good to have everything in one volume. I prefer Maury, but I suspect its colonial catalogues will remain a beautiful memory.

Thanks Geoff, I had a suspicion that it might boil down to collector interest. Didn't know about the post-war shades. Guess I have to start looking for groups of lower value to tease out some nice shades of the post war issues.

That would be great Geoff. Do you know of a resource that lists basic varieties from Dom-Tom (perfs, papers, shades, dies, printings)?

Does anyone know when the last Yvert catalog for French Colonies was published (before this one)?

2022, the first in a new, larger format. The edition before that was several years earlier.

GeoffHa,

I'd like to thank you for putting out that information about the new Yvert catalog.

I have been looking for a French Colonies catalog for quite a few years. I ordered it on the 2 November and it arrived today.
