Paintings by Velazquez - 1959Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velazquez, (1599 – 1660) was a Spanish painter, the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV of Spain and Portugal, and of the Spanish Golden Age. He was an individualistic artist of the Baroque period (c.#8201;1600–1750). He began to paint in a precise tenebrist style, later developing a freer manner characterized by bold brushwork. In addition to numerous renditions of scenes of historical and cultural significance, he painted scores of portraits of the Spanish royal family and commoners, culminating in his masterpiece Las Meninas (1656). A set of ten stamps show his paintings was issued by Spain in the "Stamp Day" on March 24, 1959. One of them shows his self-portrait: The rest stamps in the set show Velazques' paintings: - The Spinners (detail) - The Surrender of Breda - Las Meninas (The Maids of Honour) - Balthasar Don Carlos - Aesop, ancient Greek storyteller and fabulist, 7-6 centuries BC (detail) - The Forge of Vulcan - Menippus of Gadara, Greek Cynic satirist, 3rd century BC (detail) Missing two stamps: 15 Spanish céntimo - The Drinkers (The Triumph of Bacchus) 1 spanish Peseta - The Coronation of the Virgin |

Hi. I've seen this thread today, I don't come here much. In your introduction you write: "Spanish and Catalan paintings", you are from Israel, would you say that you have paintings from Israel and Haifa?, it is all of Israel, just as it is all of Spain. If you are interested in any of these series in particular, let me know. Regards. |

Hello Roberto,
Thanks for your comment. No much intentions behind my description and you surly noted the Spanish flag I put in the first post. I am not an expert in art, and take my information from the web, especially Wikipedia. When I searched for information about the paintings, I always saw there is a distinction between Spanish painters and Catalan painters. For instance, Fortuny and Sert are described as Catalan painters and the rest are described Spanish painters. Hence, I wrote "Spanish and Catalan Paintings".
Roberto, your page is wonderful and thanks you posted it! do you have more pages with stamps of this series? If yes, I would love to see them, even those show sets already posted in this thread, since your pages show the complete paintings in side of the stamps. Thank you in advance. Eli |

Paintings by Francisco Goya - 1958Francisco Jose de Goya y Lucientes (1746 – 1828) was a Spanish romantic painter and printmaker. He is considered the most important Spanish artist of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His paintings, drawings, and engravings reflected contemporary historical upheavals and influenced important 19th- and 20th-century painters. Goya is often referred to as the last of the Old Masters and the first of the moderns. A set of ten stamps was issued on March 24, 1958, one of them shows Goya portrait by Vicente Lopez Portana (1772 - 1850): - The Sunshade - The Bookseller's Wife - The Count of Fernan-Nunez - The Crockery Vendor |
