I found this stamp in my great great grandfathers collection that has been in a box for 50 years. Is it the same as the one in this photo? Or does it need a special marking??

The Scott number, 43, is right on the approval card in the glassine with the stamp. The catalog value is $27.50.

The valuable stamp you are referencing is rare because it has the syllabic character 15 while yours has 13.

Ahhh okay, thank you for the explanation, as you can tell I'm a newbie. I'm continuing to look through this collection so I'll see if I can turn up any other interesting finds. Thanks!

Keep them coming Chase! You never know what you will find and sometimes the catalog value is not as important as how interesting something is. Most stamps are not that valuable but that is not the main goal of collecting.

Hi Chase, your stamp seems to be a forgery - which is very often the case for classics Japanese stamps. Indeed it is a well known forgery made by Wada, and I reckon it is Wada Plate 23 or 24, Syllabic 14. It does match the design features described in the following link (see "Unsigned" forgeries, Wada Plate 23 and 24 - no shading west of bottom "6" in "6 Sen").

The postmark, although very faint, should be the often used fake "Tokyo Mozou " double circle date stamp.

So, even it is a forgery, it's definitely worth keeping !
