I wonder if anyone has seen this 'C W' overprint on any stamps of British India. This is SG #91 or Scott #40

Not terribly helpful, but proof that at least one other similar stamp was found: https://www.worthpoint.com/worthope...nt-463868209

Wikipedia says that the Court of Wards did continued in the Era of the British Raj. I bet you are correct. Could they have used postage as a court revenue.

Good catch. I bet you are right. Will continue the search. Thanks.

It would ONLY exist as a result of the Raj, I think.

Sorry have to disagree , none of my India Government Agencies overprints are as sloppy and poorly done like the one above , so I am going to say --- If used by a agentcie it was done on a typewriter without proper authority.
So as I stated above was put on there privately ..

Identify the postmark and you might be able to find a company name that fits from an old almanac or annual report.

If the first letters are M A, there are not all that many squared-circle postmarks that could fit. It looks like it has to end in R A, or R A __?

[courtesy of clivel's ImageSleuth]

MADURA AND MAHOMMERA seem to be too short and too long, respectively. MASHRAK? MATHERAN? MAYAVARAM? If there is a letter after the R A, then there might be something before the M, or it wouldn't be centered at the top of the arc.

After I hit "Preview" I now think I might see something in front of the M and something else after the A. Anyone recognize a possible fit for the postmark?

How's that for a wild goose chase?
