Yea, based on how the morning sale is going - stencil markings went through the roof.

Some did, some didn't. Just like every sale. Scarce material of quality brought big bucks. The rest did okay but nothing to write home about.

You are right about the stencil markings. When the bidding on one of them slowed down and stalled below the low estimate of $400 I placed a last-second bid hoping to snipe it while everyone else was asleep. Well, everyone else woke up and bid it up to $6250! I'm embarrassed now with my bid of less than 10% of the final hammer price, it makes me look like a cheapskate.

I think "extremely fine" and "ex-Jarrett" are redundant. The quality of his collection was just astounding.

The same thing happened with the high values on cover. The quality items did very well, and the rest did okay but nothing special.

Kind of surprised that some of the items went for less than ten percent of catalog. Anything with "largest recorded" did well but not slap your momma crazy.

I would think that the real market is fairly small. A lot of collectors who say "what a great cover", but who can't or won't bid. And they are not easy to store either.

I was able to pick off one stencil this morning (I had bid on 6 or so), and I won 2 lots in the Field sale.

Yea this is a real issue for some things, like these.

I'm almost tempted to start a separate thread to discover different strategies for storing large items.

Funny you should mention this - I was trying to figure out how to store and display cigar strip tax paid stamps over the weekend - some are too long for the SAFE oversize horizontal pages
