Hello all! Hoping for some expert counsel on this one. I am reviewing this Penny Black and based upon the O flaw 2, the E being high and to the right and the L being Central this looks like a plate 10 BUT the Red MX cancel would be extremely rare on a plate 10. What do you think? I see no real ray flaws either. Thanks for the help!

Is it really extremely rare? I've checked a dealer's listings, and eight out of a total of fifty Plate-10s have a red MC. The asking price is less than double the price for a black MC.

Thanks to both of you for your replies and info. I had read in the various literature that plate 10s are rare to extremely rare with red MX cancels - see image. Pjr - can you give me a link to the dealer as I'd like to have a look. Thanks again for your assistance. You both are a credit to the forum!

It's BB Stamps Ltd. (No "EL" offered, unfortunately.)

My 2004 SG Specialised catalogue lists Plate 10 with black MC as £500, red as £900. But the same catalogue calls the red MC rare!

Hello - hoping this is a fair location to drop this inquiry. I recently "stumbled upon" a nicer looking penny black and have been reading through some general references that I have found online. I am not finding a user-friendly resource thus far (step by step plating tutorial) - so if there are any recommendations of good resources that would be great and appreciated.

Leaving a picture of the stamp I am so curious to learn more about. Cheers!

Thank you pjr, I have been out on vacation and am playing catch up but wanted to say thank you for the link. As to the stamp, I agree the margins are what drew me to the stamp initially.
