On the matter of the technical challenge, Scott has long depended upon the inputs of volunteer advisors to guide or assist in the classification of material. These advisors do not always agree, but the editor is under some pains to respond over time. It can be delicate. However, Scott has now split off from Amos press and very much wants to stay close to the philatelic heartbeat as much as it can. They need our support as advisors and consumers to get this ship to sail properly.

Right; and I think a key issue is how does Scott know if those sources are adequately vetted? Its a challenge.

IMO it is a circular problem for Scott. They rely on outside expertise but don't have the internal expertise to determine the veracity of the outside information. Scott obviously can't go down any rabbit holes with their limited resources which puts them in a damned if you do, damned if you don't position. Keep the listings basic OR acquiesce to those who want more granular information in the catalogs. A fine line since becoming a technical reference is not what Scott was ever supposed to be. Their original sin was probably starting down the road of ever finer categorizations in the first place. Hard to stay still once you start and impossible to go backwards.

An example of going beyond scope would be plating. They have listed values for the plates of some issues, but you don't look to Scott for the resources to actually plate.

They list plates for specific varieties, such as cracked plates or double transfers. Which has nothing to do with plating per se, it is simply to allow specific stamps to be recognized and listed.

I don't agree with Burns' conclusion as to the origins of those hard paper stamps but that is another matter for another day.

Winston, if we opened another thread would you be willing to discuss your thoughts more fully? This topic is of more than passing interest to me.

For others, the article in question is by the late Ron Burns
"HARD-PAPER PRINTINGS OF THE 1879 AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY STAMP"
Chronicle 253 / February 2017 / Vol. 69, No.1, pp82-86
