I recently posted a question regarding one line name cancels on Stamps of the Netherlands Indies. The answer, which was that it was a legitimate cancel used in small villages, surprised me somewhat because I honestly thought that it would be a private precancel of some sort. In the same stamp lot I came across something very similar on a Swiss stamp. Any information on it would be very helpful.

There are two scans posted. The first is the cancel I am curious about. The second is a Box Cancel but it does have similar straight line place(?) names so possibly is a related usage.

The first appears to be a cancelled or specimen stamp. It is not a postal cancellation from a town.

It reads "AUSSER KURS" (out of circulation).

Philatelie von A-Z erklärt: AUSSER KURS
AUSSER KURS

These were sold to collectors below face value. They were invalidated with the "AUSSER KURS" stamp. This is something that was done in the 19th century.
