The Burgtheater is the national theater of Austria in Vienna. Opened in 1741 by Habsburg Empress Maria Theresa of Austria. Her son, Emperor Joseph II, called it the "German National Theater" in 1776. Until the collapse of the Austrian Empire in 1918 it was called the K.K. The Vienna State Opera (Wiener Staatsoper) was constructed between 1861 and 1869 The opening premiere was Don Giovanni, by Mozart, on 25 May 1869. Emperor Franz Josef and Empress Elisabeth attended. The building was bombed and set on fire by the US Air Force in March 1945 but rebuilt by 1955. It was reopened with a performance of Beethoven's Fidelio,Austria Scott 607 Reopening of the Vienna State Opera in 1955  This block was issued in 1969 for the centenary of the Opera house and shows various scenes from the many famous operas performed there. Here is a pic I took of the Vienna State Opera when I visited in 2017.  Arrow indicates on Google Earth the location I was viewing from across the street at the Albertina Art Museum in front of the equestrian statue of Archduke Albrecht.  |
