Hi all,

I've built up a solid worldwide collection of stamps and revenues and I'm looking to specialize. I'm interested in building a collection primarily focused on postmarks, especially areas that are understudied or overlooked in postal history. I want something that is:

- Affordable to collect
- Has potential for research and documentation ( I love research)
- Not already heavily covered in literature.

im open to suggestions on specific issues and time periods as well as overlooked regions or countries where new contributions could be made.

And what are some references as starting points?

if anyone here has worked on similar projects or know areas that need deeper study, I'd be grateful for some guidance.

Thanks in advance!

—Jake

You could look into postal history of your town or state - something where you have personal knowledge that you could bring to the table. Some states have been heavily studied, others not as much - but there is prior art on all.

I would love to have an old cover cancelled in my town. I don't know how long we have had a post office, but I think it goes back to the penny black. I have never seen any postal history from my town yet.

There is plenty of literature on ex-British colonies, although a lot of the studies, for example those by Proud, only go up to Independence. Post-Independence is another matter; far less work has been done. For example, there are hundreds of Nigerian post offices listed by NiPost for which no postmark has yet been recorded.

I once started a collection of United States post offices located on islands. There are some located in Michigan and along the New England coast, probably plenty more elsewhere. I didn't have time to do all the research, so I never got very far with this collection.
