I always want to know exactly what is depicted on a stamp, especially if it is a building, vehicle, or other interesting object. I always try to find out exactly what is depicted on a stamp design when the design does not explicitly state so. This thread is for the identification of things on stamps. I would love if anybody else who has been curious about what exactly something depicted on a stamp really is would post.

First: These Greek airmails feature very unusal aircraft. I assume they are different planes on each stamp. The sets both stamps are from feature the same 2 aircraft with relatively consistant design. Can anybody identify these planes for me?

Dear Ellie88

According to https://www.walter-kalt.ch/Katalog/...chenland.htm the plane on your first stamp is a Savoia Marchetti S-55C flying boat (Hydravion), the plane on your second stamp is a Dornier Do J Whale.

Best regards from Switzerland

André

I looked them up, it is definitely them. Wikipedia does not list Greece as an operator of the Savoia Marchetti S-55C, so I would assume the one depicted on the stamps was an Italian one operating between Italy, Greece and Turkey.

The next vehicle I would like identified appears on this 1956 Haiti airmail stamp.

Chevy Nomad, two door wagon, is my guess.

I asked on another site and the answer was that it is a 1955 Chevrolet 150 2 door wagon, apparently also known as Chevrolet Handyman.

Here is an image of the real car for comparison.

And here are the aircraft depicted on the previous Greek stamps.

Savoia Marchetti S-55C.

Dornier Do J Wal.

I'm new here, and this is the sort of question I had. What's a good resource or reference for identifying exactly what's shown on a stamp? I was wondering if each issuing country had its own records, or if there were "artist's statements" like with museum exhibits. Is there a stamps wiki somewhere that describes the subjects?

For example, I ran across some mineral-themed stamps from Guinea-Bissau that unfortunately don't identify which minerals are being shown. All they give is the year (2003).

Rail fans, any idea about which locomotive(s) appears on these 1953 and 1954 India stamps?

SG 343; Sc# 243

SG 350; Sc# 250

Edit for additional image.

The Scott Catalog does so at times but for other times it cops out and mentions color.

The ATA American Topical Association creates checklists which at times lists the subject matter. besides the stamp number.

I have been advised "my" locomotives are both the Indian locomotive class WP are a class of 4-6-2 "Pacific" passenger steam locomotives used in India introduced in 1947 for passenger services. Here the W indicated wide gauge (up from something more narrow) and the P for passenger.

For the rail fans here, alas, the WP was not for Western Pacific.

Thank you for the information _____ you know who you are.
