I found this stamp in a set of penny items, hence my question, as the catalog indicates a high value. The stamp has a watermark and the correct 10 x 12 perforation.
According to my 2007 Commonwealth & British Empire catalogue, it cannot be SG242, as the overprint is in blue and yours is black. It cannot be SG240 either as that has perf. 13.
Probably SG279. the date of the cancellation is a better fit. However, unless you made an error with the perf. gauge or it was reperfed, it is not the correct perforation either.
Quote: Out of curiosity, what is that red G&h.S stamp on the back?
I believe that is an Owner's mark ... someone that previously owned this stamp. Sometimes it could be an Expertisers mark. An interesting list of Expertisers Marks can be found here: https://www.filatelia.fi/index.html?
I have no idea if the overprint is original, as I don't have any material to compare it to. The top and bottom perforations are 12, the left and right are 10. I'm starting to understand it less and less :)
