I will be 79 this month. I am struggling with eye issues, went to an eye doctor recently, he noted my left eye shows evidence of prior adjustment., then cautioned me that I cannot risk vision on that eye unless you want to go blind. He is referring to his belief that any future steps I take will endanger my sight in that eye.

Has anyone heard of this? I am struggling to cope with eye issues. I looked at reading glasses only but those look to be limited. Input welcome.

I have never heard of "evidence of prior readjustment".... What is that?.... Is that a medical term? An explanation on what he means would help. I readjust my eye all the time when I have to take my contacts in and out and I haven't lost my vision.... gawd forbid you risk having "vision" in your eye because your having trouble seeing. I don't think your eye doctor is trying to help you. I would go find another eye doctor and get a second opinion. This is just my opinion to your response Hopefully no one gets upset with me.

I agree with bobcat126. Seek a second opinion. You primary care physician should be able to give you a recommendation. Don't rush into anything without one.
Good luck.

The kind of eye doctor you want to see is an ophthalmologist, not an optometrist and not an optician.

If you've never had surgery or injury on that eye I'd find a new doctor, preferably an opthalmologist, not just an optometrist (no shade at regular eye doctors, they're just not MDs). I'm wondering the context tho - were you considering Lasik or equivalent?

At your age cataract surgery is often around the corner, and such surgery typially fixes your eyesight in general. Both my parents had it, and my brother in law recently.

In the UK, the optician would refer you to your doctor and your doctor would, in turn, refer you to an eye hospital/clinic. I presume it's a similar path in the US (aside from the bills, of course).

I turned 79 in August. I've been in glasses since about when I was 5-6 yrs. old. I have cataracts developing and also macular degeneration beginning. Not much to be done on cataracts until surgery is required. There is a small red pill that I've been on for a couple of years that can slow down the other. As has been said, you need a much clearer discussion with an ophthalmologist as to exactly what your eye issues actually are and what treatments or medications or optics (glasses?) may help with whatever the condition is.

I've had cataract surgery in both eyes. My left eye was 20-700 and the right eye was 20-350.

This was the biggest game changer ever. I've said before that it was the greatest thing that ever happened to me-- for a guy that had bad eyesight, even after new glasses I couldn't read billboards, now to be 20/20 in both eyes was nothing short of miraculous.

Anyone out there who has heard that they "are getting close to needing cataract surgery", should push for it as hard as you can, and have it done as soon as you're able to and can afford to.

Ray

Cataract surgery for my right eye only (left eye not quite there) in 4 weeks. Looking forward to seeing 20/20 again, at least in that eye. I've had lasik surgery in the past, but the warranty ran out.

I pretty much agree with everyone else. I turned 79 last week. I had cataract surgery over 10 years ago In both eyes and it was very successful. I have macular degeneration in the right eye and it's too soon for any treatment. However I do spend an awful lot of time with my right eye closed. I agree with everyone else you have to see an ophthalmologist. He may refer you to a low vision specialist or macular doctor. There's a lot of great treatments out there nowadays.

This is not necessarily a stamp topic, but important topic for us collectors. Here in Canada, over age 65, we get to vist an optomitrist every two years and paid for by our government coverage for everyone. I have been told my eyes have changed shape, and I can see distance clearer without glasses now, but still require reading glasses.. She was right, but I am beginning to get cataracts. They wont be done until they "ripen" more but also, the new lenses must be done by an optomoligist surgeon before total loss of sight. Surgery covered but not lenses, $80cdn each. Maybe that is what they were referring too, cataracts, to avoid loss of sight in that eye. And if you had lasic or an eye injury or debris removed from you eye previously, or a surgery as a child to straighten the eye that you may not remember, maybe that is why she mentions previous adjustment. Are you wearing glasses now? After cataract removal and lens replacement during surgery, they usually restore 20-20 vision, but reading glasses if previously worn will still be required unless you get the new lenses with the two strengths in them.
Mike
Edit: just noted that I should not have asked if you were wearing glasses now. I think I have to clean mine.

I bought a pair of Magnifying Glasses with a light and several strengths of interchangeable lenses for stamp and other hobby work. I just slip them on over my regular glasses as needed for close work and tiny details. Under $20 on Amazon. Not sure how's lived without them! Might allow you to cope until you can figure out the solution.

I think some of you are, that the Doctor who gave me free advice in my office visit is off base; way off.

He's the son of the doctor who owns the clinic and thinks his advice is valued, it isn't. Right now I have weak vision and need correction. Will see someone next week.
