The rendition of the Toleware 3756 stamp dated 2004 in Scott indicates a white background. Scott notes that the stamp dated 2008, which is indicated as 3756A, has a cream-colored background. These 2004 stamps appear to also have a cream-colored background. I included two of the stamps showing the backing as I think they so not appear to be discolored. Any insight is appreciated.

Out of curiosity how did they get the pictures to align with their prose? The background on the photo for 3756 is white and that on 3756A is cream-colored?

As I viewed the stamp posted as 3756 I initially thought the date indicated 2004. But as I now attempt to magnify the image the dates are too grainy to get a definitive read. So most likely the stamps are just reversed. My mistake. Thanks again.

Under magnification, the illustration in the Scott catalog of the stamp with the white background clearly has a 2004 date, making it 3756.

The illustration of 3756A with a white background on Bardo's site has a 2007 date. But below the single stamp illustration is a scan of a full pane on which the background is not white.

I have both of these stamps in my collection, including plate blocks and full panes. While the background on my 3756A stamps is a different shade than the 3756, neither is white. A scan of the plate blocks appears below. 3756 is on the left.

None of the stamps I have (there's also a coil, Scott 3612) have a background anywhere near as white as the illustrations in the Scott catalog and on Bardo's site. Does anyone have a stamp of either Scott number with such a white background?

Indeed, no such thing as a 'white' background for 5c Toleware, any version. Looking at all the designs in the series will strongly suggest it was purposely avoided. as for 2004 vs later, the most anyone should have said in describing the difference, is to use the word "lighter" (not "whiter" or white) for the "cream" background. (To actual question, which is which?, I cannot say, I tend to ignore when the Year Date difference is the thing.)

Take your pick. We are talking about computer images so what you see is going to be all over the place.

Maybe you could have done that ebay search before declaring that Scott had it backwards.
