AI Tools: Handwriting Transcription

Unlike the generative AI image upscaling that I posted about earlier, the results of which are less than stellar, there is one area where the time savings could be IMMENSE, especially for those of us who deal with handwritten documents: transcription.

I knew that AI had made great strides vs. traditional OCR, but I hadn't realized just how far it's come. All those documents we have lying around waiting to glean context from, but not worth the time to do manually now appear to be far less daunting of a task.

As a quick and dirty test, I purloined a document image from a random ebay listing (first image below). I then uploaded the image to Google Gemini 3 (free version) using the prompt "Transcribe this handwriting to English."

The results, which took all of about 15 seconds to render, are shown in image 2. While not 100% accurate, it's damned close out of the gate. I'll want to experiment more with it, but I think this will open the door to discovering a document's unusual content or transactional information that wouldn't be apparent on its face, without the tediously manual labor and uncertainty previously required.

That is pretty impressive. I'm sure it will help you with many of your documents.

You have to double-check AI's work. While it can do amazing things and I regularly use it for tasks like transcription, it is not reliable enough to trust blindly. AI systems can and do make serious errors, especially when working from scanned or photographed documents.

For example, I once used AI to transcribe a photograph of a multi-page, typewritten document. In the middle of the text, it inserted an entirely new sentence that did not exist in the original. The sentence fit the surrounding context well, which made the error particularly dangerous, because it would have been easy to miss if I had not compared the transcription closely to the source.

In other cases, the AI has skipped entire paragraphs for no obvious reason, even when the text was clearly visible and legible. There was no indication in the output that content was missing, which creates the false impression that the transcription is complete.

The AI also frequently misreads individual words or characters. This is especially common when letters from one line overlap or cross into the line below, a problem often seen in older handwritten documents. In those cases, the system may combine letters from different lines, substitute incorrect characters, or guess at words that were never there.

Because of these issues, AI-generated transcriptions should always be treated as drafts rather than finished documents. Careful review against the original source is essential to catch errors, omissions, and invented text before relying on the results.
