Something strange I found today while adding stamps to my album. All reference images of 2791 show with the same color mittens as the booklet stamps next to it. I don't have a regular issue 2791 to compare it to. What do you guys think?

Well after doing more research it appears this is how the self adhesive stamp appears.
Nothing to see here you can delete this topic. |

I wouldn't delete the thread! The shade difference is useful information, especially to those of us who are not experienced with US stamps..

It isn't just a color difference. Many of the design features from the mittens to the star on the box front are different in size and/or placement. It may not be an error but it is interesting. Can't get to my catalog but does Scott designate both designs with the same number in the catalog? |

Mystic shows the self-adhesive with '#2801.' I guess it is a Scott number, as they also show the smaller stamp with '#2791' as referenced above.
There also appears to be a '#2798' from a mixed-design pane of four that has yet other colours.
It even appears the one stamp not shown in the OP is #2791 that is perforate all sides. Printers also differ. |

Scott has notes calling out design differences for 2789-90 and 2793, 2799 which are different designs from the issue (snowman and Madonna) but is silent on the jack-in-the-box design differences which are substantial.
A few differences between the perf 11.5/booklet stamps and the SA are:
1) Whites of the eyes 2) Collar stripes 3) Length of thumbs 4) Star distance to top edge of box 5) Crank handle 6) Mouth dimensions |

Another notable difference is that the "greetings" and value and country name are set lower on the smaller stamp. As a consequence, the coloured dots set higher than the crown and those above the left hand (righthand side) only exist on the self-adhesive. |

Oh yes, that's a major difference. I did not see the forest for the trees. |

My understanding now is that 2791 is the same size as the purple mittens above but the normal color scheme fully perforated.
2798 is 2 smaller booklet stamps pictured on the right.
And 2802 is the self adhesive purple mittens pictured on the left.
I didn't realize at first because the he harris catalog says it is a coil. So I assumed a standard coil perfs. However I'm guessing in the context of a convertible booklet they are imperf?
A lot of the modern stamp stuff is still new to me. |

I have often used ebay as a source for more complete illustrations of multi-design coils and other modern varieties - with the caveat that listers make errors too. Many of the self adhesive coils do not have the stamps actually touching each other. |

In regards to "illustration number," my 2003 and 2007 SCOTT catalogs list only these illustration numbers, then supplements with footnotes about some the design differences of the various formats (as mentioned by rogdcam).
- A2128 Madonna & Child (2 SCOTT numbers)
- A2129 Jack-in-the-Box (3 SCOTT numbers, plus a minor listing for the Plate Number)
- A2130 Red-Nosed Reindeer (3 SCOTT numbers)
- A2131 Snowman (4 SCOTT numbers)
- A2132 Toy Soldier (3 SCOTT numbers)
