I am looking into buying a Scotts catalog for U.S. stamps. My question is there a big difference between a 2017 issue than a 2026?
New variation stamps? Have prices changed alot in that amount of time? Thank you in advance

The 2017 has more sections which were removed subsequently for sale as standalone publications. As to price changes the only real changes involve the stamps you cannot afford. As you implied, the most recent issues of the past nine years will not be listed.

My last catalog is 2017 and I'll never buy a new one since I stopped collecting U.S. in 1993 and don't give a damn about value.

Thanks for the great info. I'm definitely not worried about the value as much. 2017 it is then.

I use a 1970, you get a feel for the values. The 1970 is only 2 volumes. The worst part tho is it's still segregated by British Empire.

I splashed out recently by buying various used copies of the new two-volume catalogues, so 12 volumes and not six. Not cheap even used. Mine are 2020 and newer. I hate this kind of purchase since I'd much rather be buying stamps.

I did so not because of what's in the catalogues but because the smaller volumes are easier to handle. I was pretty tired of picking up my 2016 and 2017 volumes which were very heavy and once or twice I manged to drop one. No book should be that big.

I've kept the older volumes so I have all the sections Scott seems determined to remove and make into separate money-makers -- oops, sorry -- catalogues. One set goes in my upstairs bedroom which has some of my albums, the other in my downstairs office which has all my other albums and is my work space. So I don't have to make so many trips back and forth to check something

I've never really understood the obsessive need to release new catalogues every single year -- other than making money, I mean. It's not necessary to do that. I'm sure I'll keep these catalogues now for many more years, maybe a decade or more. I don't care much about values, but just ID'ing stamps and getting catalogue numbers which a catalogue from any year will do just as well as any other. You might as well buy a new dictionary every year.

I spend more time identifying stamps online since the catalogs are not fully illustrated. This more important for more modern issues since sets have different designs. I have a mixture of 2016/2017 Scott plus a 1840-1970 Gibbons.

And if top management at Amos would ever wake up and join the digital world and make their catalogues available as on-line subscriptions, this would be a moot point..

Collectors would have on-demand access on their computers and cell phones whenever and where ever they wanted. Amos could ease cash flow issues by no longer needing to publish, warehouse, and ship an uncertain number of all their different catalogues each year. Digital media would allow Amos to continually up-date content as appropriate, which would be a powerful marketing and sales tool, as subscribers would always have access to the very latest material.

Digital copies might even be cheaper as well, which is good for driving both market presence and sales volume for Amos, while virtually eliminating buyer resistance to purchasing new hard copies every year.

Amos chose to price their digital offerings at nearly the same price as the printed versions and it is a "rental" so you have to renew every year to maintain access,

Scott Stamp LLC now owns the editorial content and catalogs and they are reportedly migrating the existing database to a more flexible product.
