Wishful thinking, or has this stamp been trimmed. I don't have another stamp to sit it on and wonder what your thoughts might be? Might there be any tell tale signs under a microscope for example?

The narrow margins say trimmed plus the exhibit linked here has no imperfs.

This photograph is hopeless. A scan of a flat stamp may show better details and, possibly, traces of perforations,

Also, until at least 2007, no imperforate has been listed by Stanley Gibbons.

As far as I know, this design wasn't used for postal stationery, so everything points to a trimmed perforated stamp.

Thanks for response, but further on down the page it refers die essays, plate essays, and experimental essay. Could it be either?

At first sight, at the lower left, there appear to be traces of perforations.

The hesitant cuts at top suggest these were not proofs.

But again, the quality of the picture is too bad.

If it was a proof or a trial, it would have to have been trimmed, anyway. Watermark?

(For posterity, there is no contrary info in Robson Lowe's Encyclopedia, or the Handbook/Catalogue of Union of South Africa Stamps, either.)

Thanks for comments thus far. I will get a better image uploaded, along with the back of the stamp, which shows as wm 1
