Hi Forum I have just restarted collecting again and am trying to catch up with what I have missed for the past 50 years! I am starting a plate block album (Scott) and want to mimic my hingeless Mystic US Album with the open top mounts. Mystic said they don't know which mounts they use but I am guessing they are Hawid. So I bought 2 block sizes of Hawid and I don't understand how to attach them to the album page ... they come with a bottom weld but how do they attach to the album page - doesn't seem to have a self-adhesive or anything to wet? Thanks

They are designed to be dampened, then applied. Personally, I use a dab of glue stick - if you don't go overboard, they can be removed with minimal page damage. |

They do come with a moisture-sensitive adhesive, just like stamps used to. Lightly moisten the back of the hingeless mount and stick them onto the page. If they do not have the adhesive, they might be second-hand and you will need glue. |

I also use a glue stick with mounts rather than moisten the mount back. With a glue stick, mounts can be repositioned after application and as said above can be removed without damaging the page. I apply the glue stick to the page NOT the mount. It does not wet the page like a moistened mount so less chance of wrinkling of paper. |

First things first- welcome to the forum and welcome back to the hobby. Adhere only the top side as suggested with minimal moisture or glue sticks. Because if you use too much moisture with the stamp in the mount you could end up with an unwanted line in the middle on the back of the stamps. Or mount the stamp later once the moisture is evaporated or dried. I like the suggestion of using glue sticks, especially the ones Angore suggested and showed as they are repositionable too as noted on package.
Edit- added the welcome line |

I thought they were top loaders? There are a couple Hawid-branded adhesives offered through Lighthouse/Leuchturm, but we've also seen people extol the virtues of the glue dots that scrapbookers use, but on mounts. (I don't pay close attention because I'm a Vario user.) |

CJD, point taken. Yea, I have to clarify my above statements. A tack of adhesive on the top of mount- top open hawdids. As far as any brands with a split back as previously mentioned, just a light dab on top half or risk damaging gum. I hope thats clear as mud. |

I use a wet sponge moistener, remove excess water with on my shirt or on a paper towel on the desk. |

Apparently I will be the first to suggest the likely most popular method which is simply licking the upper part of the back of the mouth -- yes, with your tongue.
If you don't slobber, and who would do that, it works just fine. Less moisture is nearly always best, so don't lick even the entire upper part of the mount. Just a single line of moisture is more than enough. I've done this for decades in nearly 40 albums of stamps now without a problem. That's probably 120,000 stamps mounted without a single slobber. And virtually no mistakes, either, at least none that required that I remove a mount. Well, maybe a couple of of mistakes.
I do like the idea of using a removable glue stick, though. So maybe I'll try that. But I'm pretty careful with my mounts especially in positioning them, so I doubt I'll ever actually need to remove them for any reason. I do notice a lot of collectors seem to have trouble keeping their stamp mounts lined up neatly, and the glue-stick method might help them. As for me, I'm just pretty careful where I place a mount so I have no real problems.
Try both methods and see which you find works best.
I've never used a sponge or any other source of moisture since I think that's more likely to over-wet the mount than my tongue will. Not to get too personal here, but my tongue is a lot more sensitive than any sponge, he said with only a little embarrassment.
I'll add that I can't think of any reason why you couldn't also use split-back mounts to mount your blocks. Scott and Prinz sell identical split-back mounts. My favorite sources are Amos Advantage and Global Stamps but of course there are others, as well. You cannot tell what kind of mount was used once they're on the page. With blocks, especially, there will be a tendency to tilt to the side, and one advantage of the split-back variety is that they grip the stamp or block nicely so they do not fall out or shift to the side which open-top mounts don't so as well. In my experience, anyway.
Have fun.

I use a q-tip dabbed on a sponge before I switched to the glue stick.
Yesterday, I had an occasion to remove a mount when I discovered I had mounted a stamp with a top open mount upside down in the album. It had been attached for quite some time but easily peeled off. I have done it when I reprinted an album page too.

Lick and stick. Maybe gross; but that's how I've been applying mounts for years.
Might start glowing in the dark at some point because I feel like I'm singlehandedly keeping Showgard in business; but c'est la vie. |
