Here are a few more I received from approvals. Ecuador 1892 Scott 27 Engraver ?The footnote in Scott mentions that issues of 1892,1894 & 1896 were printed by the Hamilton Bank Note Co.to the order of N.F. Seebeck who held a contract for stamps with the government of Ecuador. Ecuador 1894 Scott 40 Ecuador 1895 Scott 47 I think the two above are reprints since the paper appears to be thick but I don't have any others for comparison. Ecuador 1896 Scott 56 |

In a way it is no different to the companies that print the modern wallpaper stamps for various countries. Perhaps he was just ahead of his time. At least the Seebeck stamps had quality. |

Since we have been discussing multiple engravers working on one stamp I would like to include Canada in this. The majority of engraved stamps in the 1950s and sixties were the combined effort by two engravers. In most cases it was Yves Baril who engraved the picture/vignette/portrait and Gordon Mash or Donald Mitchell engraved the lettering. All this information is include in The Unitrade Specialized Catalogue Of Canadian Stamps
I believe they got that information from the Canadian Postal Archives site. http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/...80608_e.htmlThis 1955 Canadian stamp issued for the 50th Anniversary of the creation of the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan was engraved by Yves Baril and lettering engraved by John F.MashThere is some good, additional information about this stamp on AKPhilately's blog Stamp Engravers http://stampengravers.blogspot.ca/2...il-yves.htmlCanada 1955 Scott/Unitrade 355 There is a wealth of information on the Canada Archives site. Various die proof, colour trials Approved colour |

For the next Canadian stamp, Silas Robert Allen engraved the picture and Yves Baril engraved the globes. BTW this was the first 2 colour engraved stamp since the Royal Visit set of 1939. Canada 1955 Scott/Unitrade 356 Some additional info from Archives Canada http://data4.collectionscanada.ca/n...G&SECT3=POSTClick on Documents related to this stamp and then go to the various Production listings which have an X beside them. Progressive die proofs Approved die |

This is one one my favourite stamps, so simple, yet it kind of reminds me of a Canada 60 years ago. I guess polar bears were on peoples minds when they thought about Canada in the ealy fifties. Vast empty frozen spaces inhabited by numerous wildlife, pulp and paper industry, furs, fishing, mining and oil. All those were actually portrayed on Canadian stamps in that era. Canada 1953Scott/Unitrade 322 Designed by John Alexander Crosby Picture engraved by Silas Robert AllenNeither Unitrade nor the Archives mention any engraver for the lettering. There are some more engraved wildlife stamps on a thread called Canadian Hidden Dates & Designer's Initialshttps://goscf.com/t/10808&whichpage...hidden,datesAll pics below are from the Canadian Postal Archives http://data4.collectionscanada.ca/n...G&SECT3=POSTPhotograph , approved model , black and white . ;13.0 x 11.5 cm Progressive die proof , photograph, steel engraving and ink , black and white . ;25 x 20 mm
Block (40 postage stamps) , plate proof , steel engraving , deep blue . ;20.8 x 9.2 cmI would love to have this block in my collection. Die proof, steel engraving , deep blue . |

That's all beautiful material you're showing, lithograving, thanks. Love the polar bear stamp! I've tried decyphering what it says on the progressive die proof (something about a separate box?) but I've never been very good at reading others' handwriting. Any 'experts' around? |

I'm not certain whether the Czech Printing Works had seperate engravers for vignette and frame but I believe these two were designed and engraved solely by Josef HercikCzechoslovakia 1967 Scott 1471-1472 One colour Rotary Recess Print |

Czechoslovakia 1968 50th Anniversary of the State of Czechoslovakia. Scott 1515 Designer : Karel Svolinsky Engraver : Ladislav JirkaPrinting : 3 colour recess print from flat plates. This stamp could have been just as well have been printed via photogravure (probably better) but I suppose they had to keep all the engravers employed. |

L.J.Mills' handwriting cannot always be called neat, so we have to be thankful to the National Archives of Canada's experts.
Still, one important word is missing and that word is not: The letters in "Canada" should appear in ?the? sky not as though in a separate box. |

lithograving - Quote from your post of yesterday 4:12 pm: "I'm not certain whether the Czech Printing Works had seperate engravers for vignette and frame but I believe these two were designed and engraved solely by Josef Hercik".The exceptions include some miniature sheets such as http://www.filaso.cz/katalog-znamky...ta-gottwaldahttp://www.filaso.cz/katalog-znamky...twalda-arsikhttp://www.filaso.cz/katalog-znamky...a-1952-arsikwhere lettering and decorations were engraved by Jaroslav Goldschmied. See also the engravings by Jaroslav Goldschmied for the second colour printed by photogravure described in your post of 05/18/2013 4:16 pm on p.117 of this thread. Also, some of the decorative tabs attached to commemoratives were engraved by engravers different from those who engraved the respective stamps. Jiøí (Antonín) Švengsbír engraved the tabs for the following isssues: http://www.filaso.cz/katalog-znamky...eho-vojtecha Always open the illustrated supplements below. http://www.filaso.cz/katalog-znamky...fana-moysesehttp://www.filaso.cz/katalog-znamky...zskeho-snemuhttp://www.filaso.cz/katalog-znamky...ix-sjezd-kscLadislav Jirka engraved the tabs for http://www.filaso.cz/katalog-znamky...let-portretyand Bohdan Roule engraved the tab for http://www.filaso.cz/katalog-znamky...uvy-csr-sssr(This one does not appear in the supplement.) Florian you are right of course as usual. The not changes the whole meaning of the sentence and makes sense now. ************************************************************ Also thanks for reminding me about the Czechoslovakian stamps which involved 2 engravers. As noted on page 117 of this thread here is one of the stamps mentioned. Czechoslovakia 1967 Scott 1497 Note the initials B.H.-J.G on the lower right stand for the two engravers Bedrich Housa and Jaroslav Goldschmied |
