Quote: There seems to have been a fair bit of swapping between the two with Courvoisier printing photo stamps for France.
jjarmstrong47, I'm curious as to where you got that info from. The first French photogravure stamp was issued in 1930 and printed by Hélio-Vaugirard Paris. Then no more photogravure until 1966 when the first photogravure stamp by the French Government Printer was issued Premier timbre imprimé en héliogravure par l'Atelier du Timbre.http://www.phil-ouest.com/Timbre.ph...n_St_Lo_1510Same in the Maury catalogue where there is no listing that Courvoisier printed any photogravure stamps for France. |

You are correct, of course, Lithograving. I was mixing Courvoisier with Helio Vaurigard. That will teach me to trust my memory late at night. I have read an article about Courvoisier sharing work with another firm with them doing the photo and the other doing the recess but it was obviously not for France. Now I'll have to go looking. I'll start with Enschede as my senile memory is prompting me in that direction. |

A list of countries that Courvoisier printed for, as of 1998. France is not among them, although I realise that this has already been clarified. GLENN |

jjarmstrong47: I would not spend time looking at Joh. Enschede, as I am certain that they never collaborated with Helio Courvoisier.
Courvoisier did work very closely with the Swiss PTT Printing Works, of course, who possessed intaglio presses and would seem to be the more likely / obvious printer. GLENN |

Checking Adrian's list I see among the missing, five German engravers,Peter Nowraty, H. Kummer, Manfred Spiegel, Lothar Lück and Wolfgang Mauer There isn't much info about anyone of them, for instance I can't even find out what the given name of Kummer was, only his/hers initial M. Lets start with Peter Nowraty who worked for the Bundesdruckerei Berlin(German Federal Printer) between 1962 - 1967 West Germany/ Federal Republic of Germany 1963 Scott 867 - 868 Europa 1963 Engraver : Peter Nowraty West Germany/ Federal Republic of Germany 1964/65 Scott 908 - 910, 912 German buildings through 12 Centuries (same design also issued for West Berlin inscribed BERLIN) |

The 1964/65 (8 values) building series was replaced after numerous complaints about the poor designs & printing and small format of these stamps. Also there was an outcry from the public who claimed that the 50Pf had an image of Hitler in the tree wearing a top hat. The new series of 15 was redesigned by Otto Rohse ( he also did the previous one)and issued in a slightly larger format. Whereas previously the lower values were printed via typography, now the whole set was engraved . Peter Nowraty engraved these two. West Germany Scott 936, 946 German buildings through 12 centuries |

H. Kummer worked as an engraver for the Bundesdruckerei between 1966 to 1967 but as far I can find out he only engraved one stamp for West Germany, plus the same design was issued for West Berlin. West Germany 1966 Scott 947 West Berlin 1966 Scott 9N246 Engraver : H. KummerGerman Buildings through 12 Centuries. Königsberg,Prussia now Kaliningrad, Russia |
