The Centenary of Western Australia was commemorated with the swan stamp below. This was FD Manley's first engraving for Australia. From this point on he dominated both the design and engraving of Australian stamps till his last engraving, the 1962 1/- Platypus. The pink swan was designed by G Pitt Morrison:

The centre swan is absolutely beautiful at any (almost) magnification.

The following were designed and engraved by FD Manley:

Sturt's Centenary:

Kingsford Smith's Flights

The opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge (designed by RA Harrison)

The Centenary of South Australia

I really like FD Manley's work, I think he rivals some of the best engravers in the world.

Manley trained a number of engravers, One of these was ERM Jones, who engraved two lovely stamps, designed by FDM

Henry lawson:

And one of the most popular designs/engravings: The Aborigine affectionately known as One Pound Jimmy:

This design/engraving was also released as a 2/6 stamp ...and reprinted number of times

Beautiful engravings Perf. FD Manley is, as you said, amongst the best engravers in the world, no doubt.

Taylor and Harrison aren't bad at all either.

Just makes one wish we had enough time and money to own all of these great engravings. But these photos and scans are close enough. Would have never known about these magnificent works of art without all your contributions on this wonderful forum.

Antonio Ciaburro (1951- ) is an Italian artist and engraver. After graduating from college with an art degree, he studied design for two years at the Rome Academy of Fine Arts under the painter and poet Professor Antonio (Toti) Scialoja (1914-1998). Since 1976 Ciaburro has been employed by Italy's Instituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato, for which he has designed or engraved over a hundred pieces of Italian, Vatican, and San Marinese postal paper. Il Collezionista magazine, the Bolaffi house organ, awarded Ciaburro its Cavallino d'Oro prize for his philatelic designs. Here are images of some stamps issued by Italy which demonstrate Ciaburro's outstanding engraving skills.

laughing out loud - I would have thought with a name like Perf14 that the perfs would have been there. Laughing aside, they are beautifully scanned images and great looking stamps.

I figured that the perfs were never part of the engraver's work so were not necessary and could be a 'distractor' to the artistic beauty of the engraver's work. Some of us may focus on some pulled perfs etc...anything is possible

Great scans of Ciaburro's work, nethryk!

I may have to add him to my list for my engraver's album, which is still only a series of 0's and 1's on my HD, soon I'll start printing it. Each page takes a lot of ink so I am making triply sure that they are the best I can come up with.
