Collecting By Engraver

Piotr Naszarkowski (1952- ) is a Polish-born engraver who graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. He eventually left Poland and, following in Czeslaw Slania's footsteps, moved to Sweden where he has engraved well over 100 stamps for Sweden and for other countries. Here are images of four examples of Naszarkowski's engraving work for Sweden.

Stockholm City Hall, a se-tenant stamp designed by A. Prah, and issued on November 25, 1993 to publicize the Nobel Prize banquet, Scott No. 2041, Facit No. 1818.


Frans Gunnar Bengtsson (1894-1954), Swedish novelist, essayist, poet and biographer, designed by Swedish artist Jordi Arkö (1951- ), and issued on October 1, 1994 for Bengtsson's birth centenary, Scott No. 2101, Facit No. 1864. Bengtsson became famous for his Viking saga novel Röde Orm (The Long Ships), published in two parts in 1941 and 1945.


Osprey (Pandion haliaetus), designed by Swedish ornithologist and bird artist Dan Zetterström (1954- ), and issued on January 24, 2002, Scott No. 2427, Facit No. 2291.


Saint Bridget of Sweden (1303-1373), designed by Ingalill Axelsson after an original wooden sculpture by German painter and wood-carver Johannes Stenrat (c. 1410-1484), and issued on January 20, 2003 for the 700th anniversary of her birth, Scott No. 2451, Facit No. 2351.

Claude Hertenberger (1912-2002), winner of the Prix de Rome in 1942, was a Parisian decorative artist and engraver who produced many postage stamps for France, French colonies and former French colonies. Here are images of five examples of Hertenberger's work, all stamps designed (except as noted) and engraved by him.

Charles Tellier (1828–1913), French engineer who developed the refrigerating plant as used on ocean vessels to transport meat and other perishable foodstuffs, issued by France on April 7, 1956, Scott No. 791, Y&T No. 1056.


The Lycée Louis-le-Grand, a public secondary school located in Paris, widely regarded as one of the most rigorous in France, issued by France on May 18, 1963 for the 400th anniversary of the school's founding, Scott No. 1065, Y&T No. 1388.


The royal Château at Amboise, in the Loire Valley, designed by Pierrette Lambert, and issued by France on June 15, 1963, Scott No. 1068, Y&T No. 1390.


Baboons, issued by Mauritania on July 6, 1963, Scott No. 137.

The first post WW II Austrian Airmails featured planes over landscapes and buildings.
As with most of these long 1940's and early fifties sets the engraving job was shared
amongst the many engravers who worked at the Austrian State Printers at that time.

this Austrian 1948 set is one of the best.
The flowers look as if they were paintings in frames.

Stephen Báthory (1533-1586), Hungarian noble Prince of Transylvania (1571–1586), then King of Poland (1576–1586) and Grand Duke of Lithuania (1576–1586) commending Wielock, the peasant, designed by Polish artist and watercolorist Waclaw Boratynski (1908-1939), and issued by Poland on November 11, 1938, Scott No. 325, SG No. 341.


Saint George and the Dragon, in gold, semi-postal stamp designed by German graphic artist Ernst Rudolf Vogenauer (1897-1972), and issued by Germany on October 1, 1943 to mark the 11th anniversary of the National Goldsmiths' Society, Scott No. B248, Michel No. 861.


Heinrich Hermann Robert Koch (1843-1910) was a German physician famous for isolating Bacillus anthracis (1877), the Tuberculosis bacillus (1882) and Vibrio cholerae (1883). In 1905 Dr. Koch was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his tuberculosis findings. This semi-postal stamp was designed by Ernst Rudolf Vogenauer, and issued by Germany on January 25, 1944 for Koch's birth centenary, Scott No. B251, Michel No. 864.


Labor Corpsman, semi-postal stamp designed by German artist and photographer René Ahrlé (1893-1976), and issued by Germany in June 1944 to publicize the Labor Corps, Scott No. B282, Michel No. 895.

Friedrich Teubel (1884-1965) was an Austrian military officer who studied at the Academy of Graphic Art in Vienna under Professor Alfred Cossman. Teubel was also an architect, etcher and commercial designer. He engraved a number of stamps for Austria. Here are images of three examples of Teubel's engraving work with architectural subjects.

Nethryk: I had not seen the Linz State Theatre stamp before. Great "perspective" lines, a wonderful colour and a great frame and with your detailed information I should be able to find it here anytime through the "search" function. Again, thanks!

I couldn't agree more with the above backpatting. Even though they are outside my era, I've picked up quite a few of the more-modern engraved Austrias, but I keeping finding out that there are plenty more that I should have.
