Argentinian UPU (Scott 586) is quite interesting since it
was one of the first stamps printed by the brand new 6 colour intaglio
Giori press which was bought by the Casa de la Moneda in 1949.

lithograving...thanks for the info and link..i'm really enjoying contributing to this thread and forum....with recent acquistions and stamps I bought years ago because they were visually appealing to me and affordable.
Do you think we'll make it to 100??

florian..glad to have you back...i hope you can give me some info on the woman featured in this stamp..i've seen the similar image in other Czech stamps.....Is she an iconic figure like Lady Liberty (USA) Marianne (France)???

graphis - You do have an observant eye noticing things in your stamps.

Prof. Max Švabinský (1873 - 1962) of the Academy of Fine Arts, Prague, designer of these stamps, held the view that the postage stamp (as well as money) was a "visiting/calling card" of the country of issue and as such deserved the utmost care in its execution.

His garlanded women were either symbolic of
Republic (your stamp issued in 1958 for the 40th anniversary of the first Czechoslovak postage stamp),
Humanity (the 60-heller stamp issued in 1959 for Human Rights),
Peace (the 1 Kčs stamp - of the same set - featuring Garlanded Woman with Dove of Peace) or
one of the Muses (the 1.60 Kčs stamp issued in 1958 for Švabinský's own 85th Birthday, featuring his wood engraving of 1932 "The Poet and the Muse").

What drew your attention to these stamps might have been the fact that Prof. Švabinský's allegorical figures all bore the same features, being in fact those of his step-daughter Zuzana (b. 1912), who looked after him in his old age and posed for him when he was designing these stamps.

Prof. Švabinský's allegorical figures representing Republic originally wore a Phrygian cap, which is a symbol of Liberty (the set of stamps issued in 1938 for the 20th anniv. of the Czechoslovak Republic featuring Republic holding olive branch in one hand and Dove of Peace in the other, and the set of stamps issued in 1948 for the International Sokol Display in Prague featuring Sokols paying homage to Republic.

Note: The Sokol (=falcon) Physical Fitness Organisation (founded in 1865) was modelled on a similar patriotic organisation of German Turners (founded in 1848). See the U.S.A. Scott 1262 stamp issued in 1965 for the Centenary of the Sokol Physical Fitness Organisation in the U.S.A. and the U.S.A. Scott 979 stamp issued in 1948 for the Centenary of American Turners - Fathers of Physical Education and the set of two Czechoslovak stamps issued in 1938 for the 10th Sokol Winter Games depicting Falcon in Mountain Scenery.
