Here is an image of a stamp depicting the sun, a bouquet of flowers and the World Health Organization emblem, designed and engraved by Albert Decaris, and issued for use in Afars and Issas on May 4, 1968 to commemorate WHO's 20th anniversary, Scott No. 317. Note: Stamps with the same design were issued for use in several other French colonies, too.

Austria seems popular on this thread at present so I attach some of my favourites as they exist as issued stamps, black prints and Maschinprobe (machine proof) versions. I am only showing issued and Maschinprobe versions as we all know what a black print looks like. I cannot find at home the issued Lingsperre at present.

Does anyone have a definitive reason as to why the Maschinprobe versions were created, please?

GLENN MORGAN

I have magenta, red, green, blue and black colours of the reconstruction MASCHINPROBE.

Once in a while a dummy stamp design results in an issued stamp, rather than the more normal other way round. The engraving of Finnish Statesman and philosopher Johan Snellman depicts the top area of his statue and was engraved by Ms Hammarston-Jannson.

When in 1954 Suomen Pankin (Bank of Finland Security Printing House) commissioned a new stamp printing press from WIFAG in Switzerland they were asked by WIFAG to supply an appropriate engraved die that could be used to print test stamps as part of the commissioning trials.

Suomen Pankin had on file the statue steel die and the three colours of testing stamp below are the result. Two years later, the design was resurrected for use on a Finnish PO stamp, but from a slightly different die.

65170 - A couple of comments about your post are in order here:

1. Signe "Ham" Hammarsten-Jansson (1881-1970) was a Swedish artist and a prolific stamp designer. To the best of my knowledge, she was not also an engraver.

2. According to the Facit Special Catalogue (2007 ed.), the stamp in question (image below) honoring Johan Vilhelm Snellman was designed by Finnish artist Aarne Karjalainen (1898-1965) from a statue by Finnish sculptor Emil Wikström, engraved by Finnish engraver Birger Ekholm, and issued by Finland on May 12, 1956, Scott No. 339, Facit No. 459.

Glenn, thanks for showing those fascinating examples of Machineproben . Since the German probe can be translated
as trial or test and the Machine being the press wouldn't that translate as press trial or test to see if everything
on the press was working properly?

It was around 1960 when I first started noticing these small (7/8" x 1 1/8") format stamps of Denmark.
They were single colour engraved, ordinary plain designs, nothing really special, almost boring.
At first glance I didn't like their small size but gradually I started to appreciate them.
Later on when I was getting more aware of engraved stamps
I began to notice that on most of them after the early sixties
on the lower right border was written CZ. SLANIA.
I also saw the name on Swedish stamps and started wondering who this guy was.

Czeslaw Slania, engraved his first stamp for Denmark in 1962.
