1878 France 5c Green — Type 1

Classification: Type 1 (Rare Original Die)

Identifier: Signature "N" positioned under the "U" of REPUBLIQUE.

Postmark: 1878 Red "Journal" Strike.

Significance: An early usage of the scarce Type 1 die with a desirable color cancel. Much less common than the standard black cancels of the era.

Unfortunately, a few references, including the enclosed ones, identify the type 1 as having the "N" of "INV" below the "B" of "REPUBLIQUE." In the type 2, it is below the "U" of "REPUBLIQUE."

Click on any of the emissions and then the value to get information on individual stamps.

Almost without doubt. And with the predictable result.

Besides the INV, the map also shows whether it's Type I or II; it's much more reliable for me, especially with the 5 green models... In Type I, Panama is separate from the value table and is visible. Very yellow green is possible in type I. Red cancellation was for press use..

Type I SC#67 Panama visible

Type I SC#105 Panama not visible
