I am a long time collector of Newfoundland stamps and covers and have never much posted on this forum, but here goes.

My mother recently left me a box and I found a bunch of letters between brothers from 1840 to 1865; they were in different sides of the civil war. One of those letters is attached and has a "Paid" red cancel on it. It looks like it left Boston to Halifax on the Steamship Cambria?

I'm looking for any information about this, including is the cancel and cover worth selling or trading. Or just worthless and more of a sentimental thing.

The letter was posted in New York, rated 10¢ in error (the rate by land to the exchange office in Maine) and re-rated 5¢ for the postage to Boston (see the manuscript "Paid to Boston" under the New York CDS) where the letter was put on the Cunard Line Cambria which departed March 1 and stopped in Halifax on its way to Liverpool. There is a Halifax receiving mark under the tape at the top of your first image. Halifax rated the letter 1 shilling due (the manuscript "N" at center) for the British packet postage.

Given the tape staining the value is minimal. In good condition it might bring $50-$75 on ebay.

Even though it is damaged it is a historical artifact which may contain much detail of the era and events. If not a piece of family history it is still collectable in its own right, irregardless of its postal history or "cash value".

I believe I see a partial cancel at the top left, under the tape or glassine, from what appears to be the back folded part of this stampless cover. It shows a partial cancel. U-state in a round oval inside a round cancellation showing Halif MC??? - mailcarrier#- mailcoach? What year is indicated in letter?

The marking under the tape is almost certainly the Halifax UD-States marking used during this period on mail from the US arriving by Cunard Line

Is there any interesting historical content to the letter?

SPQR- Thanks for that cancel info, I have not seen that before. So I have put the two parts of that cancel together for a date of what appears to be MR 3, 1847 which answers my date question.

Thank you all. Sorry, I didn't respond more promptly, and I see you've all figured out the dates. The letter itself is two large pieces of paper folded, with essentially 4 pages of a letter. Small handwritten writing. I've had it converted into text and its a humdrum ordinary letter from Billy to his brother Bobby. He dated it at the top at Feb 16, 1847 in New York. Its somewhat historical but not really that interesting (they were relatives on my mom's side (Radford) in Nova Scotia or Newfoundland. I have other letters during the 1860s between them, who fought on different sides of the Civil War and those are more interesting...yet sadly, no stamps or covers just the letters. As noted, this letter is heavily damaged with old glassine tape keeping it together. If anyone wants it, I would be happy to post it and give it to you. Thank you again

Does anyone want this cover? I'd be happy to post it for no charge, just to have it get a home.
