I could not find these two in the Unitrade catalog. Forgeries? (I know that forgeries of these stamps exist.)

The first one appears to be a #116 - 10c plum (brown purple) by color I see on screen. No matches to it in catalogue, so probable fake.

They do list a 108 bistre-brown, definetly not color you show; as 5 hole 08-118 @$30cdn.

As for the #227 Champlain issue, that also is not listed in the catalogue. So apparently another fake.

Could either of you explain what makes these (fakes?) 5 hole perfins when there are obviously more than 5 holes making each letter?

As for whether they are 4 or 5 hole perfins, look at the verticle bars of any of the H or M in OHMS. If there are 4 holes per leg , its 4 hole perfin; if 5 per leg, than its a 5 hole perfin.

As to whether the issue is a fake or not, there is a statement made in the catalogue regarding new findings and studies, which has caused several "not officially produced" issues to be removed from catalogue listings.

Edit- spelling correction

after reading this post,..and so that I understand....the stamps themselves are genuine but the perfins (being 5 hole perfins) are fake thereby make the entire stamp fake, correct?

Bobcat, legit stamps with perfins added later making them fake. Obviously, to con collectors for money.
