I recently acquired this classic American stamp, and its fancy cancellation caught my eye. I think it might be a Native American head; perhaps someone with more experience could help me identify it, as only what appears to be a tuft of feathers is visible...
I don't rule out pareidolia, but there are precedents of similar Native American heads with a feather headdress, and what might initially appear to be a black smudge on a US stamp can hold surprises...it's possible to fall into pareidolia, yes, but overlooking it is a major mistake regardless of the outcome.
