Kris R - I like that Austria stamp showing corn-on-the-cob on the grill. In Iowa, we call it "sweet corn." Here tonight, we are in a brutally cold polar vortex, and that stamp makes me wish I had a fresh ear of Iowa sweet corn for supper. Here is another block from the USA showing the Old Capitol building adorned with cornstalks around it. The building was restored after a dome fire, and is on the campus of the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa, USA. Linus USA Scott #838 Year 1938 |

Quote: in Europe corn means wheat That sounded so odd to me that I had to look that up, and you are correct! The word corn, Wiktionary tells us, can mean: 1. (Britain) The main cereal plant grown for its grain in a given region, such as oats in parts of Scotland and Ireland, and wheat or barley in England and Wales. 2. (US, Canada, Australia) Maize, a grain crop of the species Zea mays. 3. A grain or seed, especially of a cereal crop. 4. A small, hard particle. Thanks for adding to this topic, I learned something new. Linus |
