Another really fun piece thrown in as a freebie in a recent purchase.

Contents are long gone, but there is a tag on the back that reads "EXAMINED BY 4092"

I take it that this is a mark from an official censor? In 1942, Batista was in power & relations with the US were generally friendly (yes?), though in the midst of WWII, maybe all such mails were examined?

My knowledge of philatelic history is weak, oh wise ones of the SCF...

In 1940, two things were going on. 1: Cuba was a protectorate of the USA. 2: World War II. This would explain a US censor marking on a piece of mail going out of Cuba.

Forgot to add . . .

The slogan was obviously originally written in Spanish and then translated to English. In Spanish you need a prepositional word when you have a direct object viz: The Paradise of Tourists. In English, you would simply say: The Tourist's Paradise.

That's a lovely cover (closet Cuban collector)
and I enjoyed Smauggies commentary.

That stamp has an amazing amount of thematic specialties,
rowland hill, penny black, maps, centenaries, stamps on stamps....

The cover has gone through the Machine Canceller, back to front,
the machine cancel ergo, has been imprinted on the rear of the cover, necessitating a handstruck hammer on the stamps.
The smudge on the front, is the kiss print from canceller guide, and, (what looks like) a rather over inked canceller at that time.
