I'm not much into topical collection, but still found this thread on Red cross very fascinating It's a shame that the Red cross society's 'father' Henry Dunnant was ill-treated by the Red cross society leaders and others almost until his death. Thankfully much of his honor was regained when the Norwegian committee rewarded him (and Passy) with the first Nobel Peace Price. My contribution is probably one of the oldest (the oldest?) Red cross stamps, issued in Portugal 1898-1915, for use by the Red Cross Society. Unfortunately it's not in the best state, cancelled January '98. It's a franchise stamp - and not a semi-postal - though I still consider it a stamp supporting charity as the Portuguese state supported the society by offering free postage. |

Allegorical figure of Mother Latvia protecting her wounded soldiers. 5 Semi-postal sets of 4 values each were issued from 1920-21 with the extra payment going to the Latvian Red Cross. The first 3 sets were printed on unfinished bank notes with 2 of those sets later surcharged to 2 Rubles in the inflation period. The sets are Latvia Sc B1-B20. This example is interesting in that it is double perforated at the top. |
