Monaco The 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Auguste Piccard May 10, 1984 Auguste Antoine Piccard (1884 – 1962) was a Swiss physicist, inventor and explorer. His bathyscaphe FNRS-2 made a number of unmanned dives in 1948 before being given to the French Navy in 1950. It was redesigned and took a man safely down 4,176 m (13,701 ft) in 1954.
