I found this newspaper article as padding in a Barbados FDC July 27th 1939. Pictures of KG6 and Neville Chamberlain in a coach, so I presume the King's return from Canada. The padding had remained dormant for 71 years. The article is entitled "My Day" by one M L Opie, writing from the isolated jungle of Northern Sulawesi. Mr./Mrs.? Opie owns a small gold prospecting plant in a part of the jungle called Minhassa, 20 miles from (sic) Marissa. The postman has his fortnightly "Marathon" of 20 miles (then return) over the hilly, slippery jungle tracks. The locale:

Very interesting. The country would have been The Netherlands Indies, as Indonesia did not become until 1945.
I specialise in the stamps and postal history of The Netherlands Indies/Indonesia.
Thanks for sharing,

Thanks David, I can post the whole article if you wish. I juggled with the Thread topic, and decided that "Indonesia" would satisfy a broader search text string. But of course, you are entirely correct :) and thanks for pointing that out for others perhaps new to this area.

I rummaged around in my digital shoebox, and this is the lone solitary Cinderella example I have that represents Indonesia. Very light on in this material. |

Nice cindy, Rod... thank-you. I'd be interested in seeing the whole article if you wish to scan and e-mail it to me.

You're welcome David, I would just love something like that in my neck of the collecting woods-Travancore. We had postal runners, and canoe, but I know nothing about them.

David, for your viewing pleasure an entire from my collection, Batavia to Glascow 1866 and a brief critique from the famous pre stamp journalist, Eunice Shanahan. If you can add anything, 'twould be a pleasure. I also have what I think are Japanese occupation stamps, but I shall post them on a differing thread "Indonesian ID" |

Rod: Lovely! Not much I can add to the comments already shown with the cover from Batavia. Incidentally, it is pronounced "BA-tavia". The first and second "a" are short "a"s.
Just post the Japanese Occupation stamps you have, here, and I'll look at them tomorrow, with all my reference material handy. Thank-you for sharing!

Quote: pronounced "BA-tavia Can you clarify David? Bah-tay-vee-a or Bah-tah-vee-a? All my life I have called it Bah-tay-vee-a after all, we here in west australia have our near history woven in that name, the ship of the same name was wrecked close by. Australia was discovered by women drivers searching for the spice islands. |
