I have $5 dollar red charter party revenue stamp with purported perf errors. The pics that I have are too big to load on this post. Is there someone I can email the pics to see if what I have is legit or fake?

think I got it figured out.

You may email it to me,
I can reduce the image and on-post it for you.
You probably will need our member "revstampman" opinion.

It looks like rev and swabbie haven't posted in weeks. Both went quiet while I was away.

If you're out there, guys...

Yes, we miss these fellows,
as we do the always polite and friendly Kirk S.
Good to see Collin back in the fold, embarassing us
with his brilliant stamps and scan images.

Thanks for the kind words, Rod, but this place is currently full of scan artists.

C.

Sorry to hijack your thread, Mark...I haven't a clue about the perfing on your stamp, but its interesting.

No worries on highjacking the thread. From reading what ya'll have written, I hope Revstampman takes a look though. I'm not a collector myself but bought this stamp on the cheap hoping it may hold some value; but I really wouldn't know. Values that I've found on-line are extreme from low to high but I've not found any with this error.

The 2008 Scott CV for the underlying stamp (R88c, I presume) is $9, but the catalogue notes a premium for handstamped cancels over pen cancels.

I don't concentrate on U.S. issues, so I don't keep a Scott Specialized lying around. Hopefully, we've bought some time until someone who knows what they're talking about chimes in.

I have a 1979 Scott US Specialized, and nothing is mentioned about miss-perforations for R88, so they may be rare.

To all Re: My absence, see my post in the SC Family topics section.

Re: The extra perf's. Not uncommon on the 1st Issue Revenues. They were fed into the perforator by hand and quality control was minimal. Carpenter was held to a strict delivery schedule and a low profit margin. If it could be used it shipped. Many dealers try to milk the market with these so called errors. The Perf errors command a premium of 10-20% unless it is extremely unusual! The GOOD news about your stamp is the error is on a High Denomination stamp as these are less common as less were printed and would add 25% at least depending on overall condition and centering. The BETTER news is the centering on this stamp is close to as good as it gets! The $5 and $10 are Notoriously poor centered due to the spacing between the stamps. This will add more of a premium than the misperf. Overall a very nice stamp.

Thanks, revstampman. I paid $20 for this stamp. Where do you think I stand, considering grade of course, and where would I take it to have it looked at?

$20 is on the high side but still within the fair range, Considering the centering and the Handstamp cancel. The only drawback is the color(Oxidation) However this can be reversed. But, I would practice on another one 1st. I posted a thread on how to do this a few months ago. What do you want to have looked at on it?

Somebody else that I had talked to believed it was a fake without looking at it and said it was common for the time. Again, I'm not a collector and wouldn't know fake from real or why anybody would have wanted to fake the perf errors to begin with if it adds no real "value". I've never bought a stamp before but now my curiosity is piqued is all.

It is doubtful that it is a fake. It was NOT common to fake the extra perfs at the time.
