Box Cancel Used On Postage Due (Precancel?)

I think this may simply be a local precancel, but found it interesting that the post office used a box-type cancellation on a postage due stamp. Is this correct or is there another explanation for a box-type cancellation on this item?



(Although the lettering is blurred, it is Boston, Mass.)

You seem to have a box roller cancel. It is not a precancel.
