This is definitely a cancelled stamp from the Hawaii 1894 issue, however, my older (2002) Scott U.S. Specailized has referenced a unused copy of this stamp at a lower value than a used copy; with the used copy value italicized.

Is there something I need to look out for as to whether this is a genuine used copy bearing a cancellation from that period?

Hi wt1

You might want to visit the following site that really is quite a specialized one on all of Hawaii's postal aspects.

Hope it will help you out?

Very nice stamp. A ebay seller call it the "Hawaiian Bluenose" referring to the famous canadian stamp. Never had even a single hawaiian stamp. I think it's a nice dead country to collect. I already collect Zanzibar as a dead country. I found info on this ship S.S. Arawa but no connection with Hawaii. Maybe the ship went there just once. It's not unusual for small countries when it comes to classic stamps to have a lower value for the unused than the used. I collect Iceland it's the case quit often for BOB. When the value is italicized I think it means that there is a degree of uncertainty in the evaluation because of the scarcity. But better check if Scott give an explanation on that. Daniel

Thanks for all the input on this stamp. Actually, I never thought of Hawaii as collectable stamps in terms of a "dead country", but I suppose that's right.

I do have a few Hawaii stamps, but happen to like the ship in particular, as it's one of the nicer looking Hawaii stamps in the set.

Not as good looking as the ship, but here's another Hawaii (1893 provisional government overprint) on a King Kamehameha V (unused but with partial gum and hinged):
