Back in one of my obsessive episodes, I accumulated a lot of stamps. Most are nothing special but I was putting together 125 stamp starter collections to give away or sell to get folks interested in stamp collecting. Now I have several shoe boxes and cans of stamps, some still on paper, some soaked off. After stamps became more like stickers(both in design and adhesion) I lost interest in stamps except for some topical areas.I don't really want to give them away but I really have no idea how to reasonably sell them. All together? in 25-50 stamp lots?by sets(for example,Great Lakes Lighthouses complete set)? These are all used stamps so nothing real valuable. Any suggestions?
Dealers and collectors will buy by the pound. You will probably put alot of time into making and selling small lots, and they will not be as economical from a shipping and payment (auction/PayPal fees) perspective.
Edit:
You will want to divide the On paper from Off paper and sell separately. Thanks.
If you're feeling generous you can give them to the VA, Boy Scouts or other charitable group. We have a couple of Boy Scout sponsors here in the SCF that I give mine to.
You can try to sell on StampWants (BidStart) or one of the similar less expensive sites, but if they are common like you said they won't bring much and there's a lot of competition.
IMHO it's not worth my time to photograph/scan, list, track, ship, etc. for the little financial gain.
You can also auction/sell here after you get your 50 posts. It takes much less time and effort.
Yes, stamps you give to charities are tax deductible..if you itemize..many of the charities will ask you what you consider the value of the stamps you sent and will send you a receipt..reasonable charity deductions are not usually questioned....
