Was just trying a few things including the lighter fuel. All of them are Naptha based, and all of them for my needs worked well. Also some of the stamps had a little different adhesive on them. Some stuff worked on it some did not. Also don't try to use on newspaper some the of newspaper ink transfers to the stamp. For the most part I just used a Q-tip quantity on front or back and pealed it off. Then used a plastic putty knife to get the rest. Even used a little soaked on a paper towel to rub lightly on the back just in case it still came up sticky.

So far I have tried:

Lighter fuel (zippo).
Worked well but expensive for the 4oz can.

Regular Naptha
A paint solvent from local hardware store. (Sunnyside) It
does not mention if it is VM&P Naptha which I have seen around.
A long time ago I remember S&L Naptha meant stove & lamp Naptha.
If might mean something dealing with varnish and paint.

I have also run into different adhesives that don't react well to the Naptha soaking because the stickum did not come off. These were on the 37 cent Indian blanket issue. I haven't tried other stamps from that era, they might have the same adhesive. For that I used a different product I had. It was an adhesive remover made by 3M. More fumes but a little stronger. Bought it a long time ago because I needed something that worked on the stickum but did not harm plastic. Also to keep the fumes down I worked on 10 to 15 stamps at a time.

No this came in a 1-quart tin can. Its part# is 0151135-08984 - It says its good for adhesive, silicone, wax, tar, grease, and oil. Smells strong-- well a lot stronger than the lighter fuel or naptha.

That seems like the number I remember I got from NAPA here (used to be UAP). They have to put short numbers on things so we can understand.! Or maybe that is just me.

And the description was very similar. But I remember it in a spray can. For removing labels and stuff from cars before you painted them, and I don't think it harmed the paint (at the time, there are always advances/changes).

I did some checking around on the net and there seems to be the same product in a spray can. Its numbered differently but looks like the same stuff.
