if it was older I would have thought plate crack but since everything is done via rotary press, that doesn't happen so much.

Definitely not a plate crack. Looks more like some kind of engraving error.

When enlarged it also appears to run through the nose. There's nothing in the US Specialized.

Maybe it's a dueling scar!

This may seem pretty obvious, but have you carefully checked the back of the stamp for any creases, etc., that may have affected the face of the stamp?

I'm just suggesting other possibilities, as given the date from which this stamp was issued, if it was a known variety it would almost certainly have been found by now.

the left pupil looks that way because the "ink" from the line runs through the eye. The only difference between the two stamps is one has a line from just below the eyelid down through the jaw.. I would categorize it as an oddity nothing more. (man that makes me sound like I actually know what I am talking about)

I am serious about the pupil statement.. take a another look and you can see it.

I don't know how much of this is just normal variability at this level of magnification, but the catchlights in the eyes are definitely different.

Can we get the same magnification treatment of part of the large line? Perhaps between the lip and nose (the "philtrum" for anyone who likes word-a-day calendars), where there is not otherwise a lot of activity?
