When Did Spray-On Cancels First Appear In The US?

I had kept this only because I seem to recall that it was one of the first spray on cancels I had seen, dated 05/09/1995:



Since it's more than 15 years old now, I'm just wondering if someone knows when these spray-on cancels first appeared? I am guessing that the one shown is an early one, although I'm sure it's far from the first.

"spray on" Is that the correct or accepted nomenclature?
I always called them dot matrix myself, short of
knowing what the accepted name was.
How did they get that name, any ideas?

While it doesn't answer my question on this U.S. spray-on, this link has helpful info. on the Canadian use of similar postmarks. It's an 8 page document...advance to the end of page 5 and onto page 6 (pp. 66-67 in the document) and it explains the spray-on cancels in Canada, suggesting the name was derived from the "jet-spray" cancellers:

I call the Canada ones and any similar guys ink-jet spray-on cancels. My own term, likening it to ink-jet personal printers, which the sprayed on (from jets) looks like to me. I might have read / heard it also. It all blends together after a certain point.
