Is this typical or unusual for the issue?

I know that precancels typically have bars, but in the case of this dated prencancel, the date is also inserted between two intersecting bars.

I can't answer your specific question but the practice of adding dates apparently took place in Kansas City as well.

I came across these last night when working through one of my father's stockbooks and haven't had a chance to do any research on them.

The date on the 16c looks as if it was made with a typewriter and the 24c appears to have been made with a date stamp. Each also contains initials.

This link below to a previous post should help explain the date thing ... I've never seen the dates between two bars, though, which is what I was asking about in this post.

Tomiseksj, Your 1st stamp was used by National Bellas Hess (NBH) was a mail order company.

The second was Sears (SRC) or Sears-Robock Co.

WT1, The one you show is unusual. The double lines with date between is not common.
Can you confirm what letters & date is on this stamp?

warrehouse:

MW Oct. '39 (I think) ... that's looking at the original stamp with a magnifier. The initials are almost blacked out by the "N" in "ALBANY" and the year is very, very faint.

Doesn't "MW" = Montgomery Ward?

As I understand it, MW (Montgomery Ward) and SRC (Sears Roebuck & Co.) were the most common users of the dated precancels because of all of their catalog mailings.

WT1 What you have in the Albany, NY precancel Bureau Type 61 with a M-14 Integral overprint reading downward. This overprint was unique to the M-Wards of Albany, NY.
The PSS Printed Dated Type Precancel Catalog notes that this issue was only for 4 months & is marked as a $, meaning the stamp saw limited use & can be worth from 5 to 10 times more the base, base was listed at .20, so worth $1-2. A nice fine!

Thanks for the info. It's always enjoyable to uncover an unusual find such as this. (Now I have to go through my other Albany, NY precancels and see if have any others!)

Just think of those who discredit precancels (especially dated precancels) as not being worth the trouble to collect, when finds like this come through every now and then.

I decided to resurrect this old post to share this image of yet another Albany, NY dated (Oct. 1939) precancel for Montgomery Ward.

If, as suggested earlier in this post, these precancels were in very limited use during the period, it is yet another example that would make this a "keeper".

Interesting that the bi-sected lines of the precancel and date, make it look like a tic-tac-toe board:
