I think this is a Scott #481 (Imperforate) but with a precancel from Waterloo, Iowa. Was it common for precancels to be applied to imperforate stamps?

They were really common with Schermack Type III. Probably a little less common from sheet. I have about 50-60 different ones.

Thanks. I have several Schermack precancels also, but this is the first one I've seen as an imperforate without the Schermack (or some other) mailing equipment perfs. I can only imagine it wasn't the most convenient thing to separate these stamps for mass mailings (which was generally the way mailings were done with precancels).

This precancel is not known on imperf stamps. If you look at the top-left of the stamp, it appears to have the remnants of a perforation that was trimmed away.
