What should I be wary of?

My local dealer has one up for auction, as well as a number of other US classics you have expressed interest in.

Sv,

Nice! First off, if I may, I would buy one on cover. 5c 47s don't bring a huge premium on cover and you can spend $4-500 and buy a nice stamp, or $5-600 and buy a really cool cover. Personally, I'd MUCH rather have one on cover. The recent Wagshal sale had a bunch that sold for, IMO, very reasonable prices...

The one that I thought was a particular bargain was Lot #194, that's a registered use and quite scarce.

What you want to look for on 5c 47s are color and impression, they come in a myriad of shades, some quite rare and expensive, but you want one with a nice, strong impression, some of them just look fuzzy and nasty.

IMO, Siegel is the place to buy one, but then again I'm kinda particular to them :)

Bill

Here's one that I have.. I have technically owned it since I was 2. (My Dad bought it for me at a Harmer's sale in the late 70s)

some of those prices went from 250.00 to 8000. it wasn't the stamp that commanded that price it was the cover it was on.

I'll stick to just plain stamps unless I can get a 250.00 cover...

I would say that the stamp on this particular cover is a good guide as to what to look for. You want to have four clean margins, preferably 1/16 inch all around, or close to it. Once acquired, I would soak it in watermark fluid to check for faults (thins, repairs, etc).

Nice margins. Good cancel that doesn't obscure the face too much.

Pretty good find.

You know, I keep saying I'm done spending money for a couple of months on the collection. Then I look at the next auction catalog...

Like you won't be back in a couple of days showing us the next, newest purchase! We know you better than that, 'V!

Congrats on finding one you're happy with.

Well, give me the credit to know it would be worth more than the stamp.
