That is truly a beautiful example of a stamp,
to my ignorant US eye, it almost looks too perfect
in that it has not carried out real postal duty.

I like the matte grey or neutral coloured paper. Lets your attention wander from the edges of the stamp to focus on the actual detail and qualities of the stamp's design and colours.

They do something similar in framing art and photographs I think.

Of course if you had a gorgeous frame you would want attention paid to that also so wouldn't do the matte framing.
