I have 2 large envelopes of these things.
This is a small sample of the basics,
with some of the very oldest thrown in.

Bear with me as I figure out how to load a pic!

Got more, but I have to resize the files.
The ones here are the old ones.

I really like the first one.
It is from Mrs. Roosevelt's assistant.
Note the return addy...
I figured Elanor had something to say,
but was wrong! What was Teddy's wife's name?

This will be edited a few times as I am having
uploading/resizing issues!

I guess I didn't need the pic warning!

I have one from 1978 that I will scan in later.
I gotta dig it out.

It is a little ragged, but is marked
"Recovered from plane crash wreckage"...
or something to that effect.

gussyboy,
Glad to hear someone likes them!

I don't know anything about them,
except that I always thought they were neat.

How do I take care of these?

Alot of the covers are pretty rough,
I'd like to preserve what is left of
their good looks.

Dave, there are collectors who specialize in covers from plane crashes etc....also on those 19th covers town postmarks can be a factor ...some post office cancels are very rare..and of course the scott catalogs I forgot to mention..if you have a library of any size near you they will have a new (2008) set of catalogs in the reference section OR you can just hang around here and pick up info !

To protect your better covers you can put them in Prolar Holders. You can also put them in poly bags; these are cheap but they are flimsy. Both types come in a few different sizes. Another alternative is to buy a cover album. The album will not fit all your covers, though, since they are not all standard size (for example your White House cover is too tall).

Saltsburg, Pennsylvania is a very small town (955 in 2000 census), so your first two covers would be of special interest to a collector of Pennsylvania postal history. The first cover also has a nice strike of a fancy cancel on the stamp.

I couldn't find a population for Sarversville, Pennsylvania, (the town cancel on your third cover) so it may be even a smaller community.

Thanks for the research.
I see where you are coming from.

Is it just me, or is the yellow one
cancelled by hand in ink pen?

On the other side of the envelope,
it says "Dec 1861".
That seems like it could be what the
writing on the stamp says. Not sure.
I thought my hand writing was hard to
read! Looking at these envelopes, one
would think we didn't learn to write
legibly until WW2!

Sarversville may be the current Sarverville near Butler, PA. I've gotten lost driving around there a couple of times.

The stuff came from New Kensington area.
Should be alot of Freeport, Slate Lick, Pittsburgh, and other like marks on them.
Many were passed from family in that area.

It's easy to keep them coming...
Here are some group shots.
Same group, different angles.

There is a pile of Army and Navy airmail cancels
I separated out in the upper right corner of the pile.
That is a fair portion, but not all. I got sick of
pulling them out and gave up so I could get on
with taking the pic.
I also noticed 2 or 3 international covers with
non-US cancels and different stamps.

I found one Navy cancel with no stamp.
It said "Free" where the stamp should be.

Enjoy
Dave
