The post office (Zip 05766) is in the Ripton Country Store on Vermont 125.

Seriously, cdnum, I think it is a great question. Is there a primary reference source (or multiple sources) for learning about and/or identifying U.S. postal cancellations?

I look forward to learning the answer.

According to USPO V4 - the Northeast, by Helbock shows Ripton, VT operated between 1830-1980's is now a DPO Helbock rates Ripton a 1 on his scale, 0 being common/operating to 9 very rare. Value up to $2.

Could you elaborate on what this work is? Is this some sort of a catalog of postmarks? When was it issued? Is it still in print?

A web search finds nothing.

The above is a Doane handstamp postmark. There are collectors who specialize in them. For a decent primar reference book, I would recomment "Postmarks on Postcards" by Richard Helbock. It doesn't have values, but it gives pretty decent descriptions to identify U.S. postmarks from the late 1800's through WWII era. Of course it can be applied to covers as well.

The "United States Post Offices" is a 8 volume set by Richard W. Helbock the same author of the book Battlestamps mentions. This guide, lists all the PO's with date of operation, open to close, if it applies, county state and relative scarcity. Each volume contains historical background that fits the region. It does not describe various types cancels that may have been used.

Finding that rare stamp something. Wow how any people have tried in all the years I have been into stamps. I always caution to collect stamps for fun.

In any event cancellations are pretty much fun. Not an area that I specialize in, though some do. When it comes to US stamps some of the older cork cancellations can bring some extra money. In addition some of the pictorial cancellation can also do well.

This web site from Jim Forte's postal history website can help identify years of operation for most U.S. post offices as well if you don't have access to the 8 volume set:
http://www.postalhistory.com/postoffices.asp

It's very basic and doesn't have values, but you can tell if it's a DPO or not. It can also do a string search if you only have part of a town name.

As for postmarks, it's another door to another aspect of postal history and collecting that is quite fascinating.
Enjoy! Will
