i agree his song of the Edmund Fitzgerald is not super great. it is monotone as all ballads are. the music is very sweet/sorrowful and his voice singing it...that's what makes it good.

Re Hwy 61 - before we leave the North Shore of Superior I would suggest this stamp (Scott 1069)in honor of Great Lakes Transportation. It also has the image of an ore freighter similar to the Edmund Fitzgerald. Hwy 61 heads down the north side of Superior to the lakehead at Duluth.

After this - Minnesota Centenary, Marquette on the Mississippi or Fort Snelling??

Scouter: had to check my collection to make sure I had the "Soo" stamp (Scott#1069) and I have a used one. The suggestion of Marquette on the Mississippi is an excellent one. Backing up Highway 61 to just north of Grand Marais Minnesota (not to be confused with another community in Michigan with the same name) is the village of Grand Portage, which was the starting point for one of the major fur trade routes to the west. I once camped where the portage trail meets the Pigeon River on the Ontario-Minnesota border. Does anyone know if there is an American stamp that commemorates this historical route?

I can't think of a US stamp that commemorates Le Grande Portage. And it was far from "grand". It was long and steep and men were of smaller stature then and as I recall carried packs of 200lbs. They wore colorful legging bands above their knees, not as decoration but to keep their knees from blowing out. Many were crippled making the trek. The National Monument at Grand Portage is interesting for sure.

Scouted - I don't have any catalogues or my collection at hand but isn't there a Minnesota Boundary Waters stamp that could fit the Highway 61 theme?
