There is in our very nature as human beings a capacity to conceive of and appreciate the beautiful, good and true things in life. The beauty instilled into well-designed stamps is not the least expression of that beauty we all desire, and it is all the better when it is more than just beauty to admire, but beauty which we can posess, hold and examine. Philately, then can help to satisfy the innate human desires during our journey through life.

I say this so as to discourage PhilB from self-flagellation, and encourage him to appreciate that a desire for stamps can be, in reality, an expression of desire for eternity.
